Stone Town is a place, not a stopover
A UNESCO-listed maze of coral-rag alleys, carved doors and Omani balconies, where Africa, Arabia and India have been trading and intermarrying for a thousand years. Give it a night, not an afternoon.
The reef is genuinely good
Mnemba's drop-off, Pemba's walls and Mafia's coral gardens are among East Africa's best diving and snorkelling — not a consolation prize for people who came for wildlife.
It is the right way to end a safari
Game drives start before dawn and the days are long. The coast is two hours from Arusha by air, which turns a hard-won week in the bush into a holiday you come home rested from.
The spice farms are still farms
Cloves, nutmeg, vanilla and cardamom growing where they have grown since the 1800s, picked and crushed in your hand. It is the one tour on the island that still smells like the thing it is about.
Whale sharks, in season
Mafia holds a resident population and is the East African place to snorkel with them — a genuine wildlife event that has nothing to do with a game drive.

Timing
When to come to the coast
June – October
Kusi · dry, breezy
The reliable window and the one that pairs with the northern safari season. Cooler air, lower humidity, steady south-easterly wind — excellent for sailing and kitesurfing, occasionally choppy for diving.
October – February
Kaskazi · hot, still
The north monsoon pushes plankton-rich water down the coast, which is what brings the whale sharks to Mafia — they peak in these months. Hot and humid by January, with the calmest seas and the best visibility of the year around September to November.
November – March
Best diving
Warm water, light winds and long visibility. The strongest months underwater on Mnemba, Pemba and Mafia alike.
March – May
Masika · the long rains
Heavy, warm rain and the quietest beaches of the year. Some smaller camps close. Prices fall sharply, and if you do not mind an afternoon downpour it is the best value on the coast.
Ramadan moves each year and changes the rhythm of Stone Town — many restaurants close during daylight. We will tell you if your dates fall inside it, and it is not a reason to avoid the island.
Beyond the beach
What there is to do
Stone Town on foot
The old quarter with someone who grew up in it — the Anglican cathedral on the old slave market, the Omani doors, the evening grill at Forodhani.
Spice farm walk
Cloves, nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon in the ground rather than in a jar, on the farms behind Kizimbani.
Mnemba snorkelling and diving
The atoll's drop-off, reached by dhow from Matemwe — the reef most people mean when they talk about Zanzibar diving.
Kitesurfing at Paje
Shallow lagoon, dependable cross-shore wind and a row of good schools. Strongest in the Kusi months.
Jozani Forest
The last stand of the Zanzibar red colobus, found nowhere else on earth, an easy morning from the east coast.
Swimming with whale sharks
Mafia Island, in season. Snorkelling rather than diving, and regulated — we book operators who keep to the code.
Sunset dhow
A lateen sail, an hour of light, and nothing else on the agenda. The cliché is a cliché because it works.
Doing very little
The honest one. Most guests arriving off a safari want a book, a shaded hammock and no alarm for three days.
